My binge (read: my procrastination) has continued, and in that vein I've been watching my fair share of romantic comedies. (Admittedly this has been peppered with a nice spacing of old Star Trek episodes and action films, but I think I do this every so often to remind myself I'm a girl.) haha
As a John Cusack fan, I was surprised to find I had never seen Serendipity. (I find it odd that prior to watching that that word was not in my day-to-day vocabulary. Now it seems to be turning up everywhere!) As such, I allocated an hour and a half of my day to sit down and enjoy it.
For those of you who don't know (but still care), the movie is supposed to be about letting fate take its course. It follows the idea that destiny leads you to your soul mate and that a series of well-timed events ultimately lead to your happiness. The etymology of the term suggests that one finds (by accident) something wonderful but unexpected in their search for something else. (Or so I thought.)
I suppose the intial meeting between Cusack and (Kate) Beckinsdale could be described as serendipitous. Afterall, they were both embroiled in their own relationships when a chance encounter brought them together at a Bloomingdale's counter - (Lord how I hate clichés!)
But the rest of the movie is decidedly un-serendipitious (if there could be such a thing), as both, in rememberance (and in questioning what might have been) struggle for the majority of the movie to reconnect, despite having moved on in their lives.
By the end, I wasn't sure whether the point was that serendipity existed or that fate was blind, deaf and dumb and often needed to be coaxed (only to do as it pleased, anyway).
Still... it's a cute film, for what it's worth.
